SURREY - First Details - Let's Roll in BC
Well folks, Calgary WickFest wrapped up just over a week ago and we can say without a doubt, that Canadian Tire WickFest Surrey is in for a treat if it's anything like the Calgary event. We had new clinics and workshops, new special guests, great swag bags and more! This year in Surrey, with the new venue added to the picture as well as almost 30 new teams, we just know the energy will be electric!
Let's get you started on the first of the most important details. Also, please watch your emails as information will start to come fast and furious in the next days and weeks.
VERY IMPORTANT - Travel permits/permission forms - DEADLINE DECEMBER 11th
If you haven't already and are coming to Surrey from out of town, be sure to get your travel permission/permit from your local association. This is just a letter indicating you are permitted to come to the Surrey event from your association. Many associations allow you to apply online, though some will require an email to your registrar. WE REQUIRE THESE LETTERS NO LATER THAN DECEMBER 11th in order to get our game numbers, thereby book our referees.

Please ensure you have entered your roster no later than December 11th. Rosters entered later than December 11th are not guaranteed to be included in the printed souvenir program. To enter your roster, log into https://events.teamsnap.com. Click on Upcoming Events (NOT TEAMS) and follow the directions to enter your roster there. Please include, at minimum, name, jersey and a contact email (likely the parents')
NOTE: If you are a US-based team, we need a spreadsheet of your players' zip codes sent via email to email@example.com - the reason for this is the new online BC scorekeeping system requires us to create pseudo-"profiles" of the players.
Team Photo for Souvenir Program
It’s time to upload your team photos! These can be professional photos or completely informal photos. We’ve even had some pretty silly ones in the past. We just ask that they are a decent resolution (current cell phones are fine) and that they include a fairly close-up shot of your team as the photos will be just a bit bigger than a business card.

We are ALMOST complete the draft schedule and will have a FINALS schedule posted within a couple of days. Stay tuned. The full schedule is anticipated to be live just after Christmas, as we are just working on shuffling some tiers around based on some results from big tournaments over the Christmas break.

Sledge Hockey Showcase
Check our Canadian Women out during a Sledge Hockey Skills demo on Friday, Nov 15 from 1:30 to 2:15. EVERYONE is welcome.
There is limited parking on the Player Level Entrance to the North, but have no fear, there is lots of parking on the south side of the building. Leave yourself enough time and don’t forget to lock your vehicle.
During each Opening Party we will be hosting a Chuck-A-Puck. Buy 1 for $10 or 3 for $20. At some point during the evening you’ll be given a chance to Chuck your numbered puck at a target and if you’re the closest you’ll have the chance to win one of two great prizes.

Hayley’s Mom Made Us a Quilt!
Canadian Tire WickFest is celebrating its 10th anniversary and Marilyn Wickenheiser (yes, that’s Hayley’s mom) has honoured the occasion by making the most incredible quilt! We will be raffling the quilt over the course of both weekends.
Opening Party Weekend #1 (Bantam & Midget)
Natalie Spooner, multiple gold medalist, Amazing Race finalist and Battle of the Blades goddess will be your host along with local media guru, Sue Deyell.
Nat has invited some of her pals including hockey linemates Rebecca “Johnny” Johnston and rival American Brianna “beat the NHLers at the All -Star Skills Competition” Decker. Who is going to challenge these girls at the shot accuracy booth???

Opening Party Weekend #2 (Novice, Atom, Peewee, Elite)
We’re changing things up and instead of partying on Arena A this year, we’re going to party on the Garden Café level this year. We’ll set up a parent cash bar, have the Café open (if nachos from the hosted nacho bar aren’t your thing) and of course have the band and DJ Rocking for your weekend too.
Be ready to challenge your teammates to some fun games from floor curling to nerf shooting.

Hayley at the Hall of Fame - The Good News and the Bad News
While we are over-the-moon thrilled with Hayley’s induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame this coming weekend, we have been waiting on pins and needles to confirm, that it does in fact mean, she will not be present at WickFest Weekend #1. This is the first time in 10 years (that’s almost 20 WickFests) she will not be present and it’s breaking her heart and mine. Of all 52 weeks in a year, how could it possibly be the same weekend as WickFest Weekend #1? It’s true, there are mandatory events she must attend starting Wednesday through Monday.
While she can’t physically be there during Weekend #1, she is going to Facetime us, send Cameo shout-outs to specific teams as they ask for them and do her absolute best to be as present as she can be.

Innofoods is about to make one team's weekend a tad sweeter. All weekend long, they will fuel you in the dressing rooms and now they’re looking to sweeten the deal. Thanks to our great partner, Innofoods, a company that believes in community and supporting the growth of youth hockey, they are awarding one team that has shown exceptional sportsperson ship with a $500 bursary. We hope this continue you to inspire you to always play fair, on and off the ice. Throughout the weekend, if you see or hear of a great example of sportsmanship, tell us about it at the Team Check-In desk, Tweet Us @wickfest, Facebook it to us at www.facebook.com/wickhockey or tell us on Insta.
For both weekends, medical staff are either on-call or on-site. This may include nurses, doctors, medics, paramedics or trained first-aiders. The process that will take place is as follows:
1. A player goes down or requires medical attention
2. The coach or team medical personnel indicates to the rink coordinator that the personnel is required. (If no rink coordinator is visible, the coach or team asks someone nearby to alert the Team Registration/Check-In Desk. This is unlikely.)
3. The Rink Coordinator will contact the appropriate medical person in the building as well as someone on the WickFest staff to indicate severity of incident.
4. The appropriate level of care is dispatched. If care is required in the dressing room, a member of the team (parent, staff or other must attend in the dressing room along with WickFest or medical staff).
5. A verbal report will be given back to the team/parent regarding outcome.
6. If incident is deemed severe, an emergency protocol will ensue
An athletic therapist is available on-site at WinSport from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. each day. This service is provided FREE of charge, so don’t be shy. If it aches or pains the player, send them over.
At the Team Check-In desk, we have a box of goodies such as hair ties, lip balm, candies, safety pins, feminine hygiene products, stuff for headaches, gum, etc. If you think we wouldn’t have it, we actually just might. We’ve been gathering stuff for 10 years!
If you need to store your equipment between games, it can be placed along the wall on the running track on Arena A. You must keep a path clear and all doors clear.
Player of the Game + NHL Principles
The NHL is back as a sponsor again this year and along with our traditional Player of the Game necklaces, designed by Heavy Metal Design (www.heavymetaldesign.com) and partially sponsored by Gatorade Canada, we will be giving each team two certificates after each game identifying two of the NHL’s Declaration of Principles. Please take a second to review the principles to be prepared to give these to one of your players on the ice.
Please bring one sheet of gamesheet stickers for finals gamesheet preparation. You can drop these off with your copy of your hard copy roster and your waivers.

FREE - INDIVIDUAL PLAYER CARD SCHEDULE
WickFest is quickly approaching and as you all know already this tournament offers a lot of awesome “extras” including individual digital pictures of each player. Mojo Photo Calgary will be providing the individual off ice photo of each player in their hockey gear. We will be located in the same space as last year which is near the elevators/Joan Synder Arena on the ice level. You can’t miss us as we’ll have large blue/green screens set up.
Managers please ensure you check the photoshoot schedule attached below or posted on the white column near our set up. There are over 100 teams coming through and it’s important we stay on schedule, so please please please have your team show up on time or a few minutes early.
It will take about 15-20 minutes/team - we have tried to have each team come for their photoshoot and then be able to return to the dressing room for 15 minutes before game time. Some teams have been booked after a game - we then tried to allow for 10-15 minutes before they were scheduled to allow for a quick fresh up.
If your scheduled time absolutely does not work please reach out and advise a few times that may work better and I’ll get back to you. If you wish to OPT OUT please advise and your team will be removed from the schedule.
For any changes on the day of please see Anthony or Alvina to discuss and we will be as flexible and accommodating as we can.
Please ensure that you neatly leave an e-mail address, name and phone number is left on the CONTACT SHEET that is posted on the white column behind our camera set up. These details are so we can provide you with a Dropbox Link of your teams photos; if this is missed it will delay when you receive the link as I will have to track down a contact for your team. You can expect a link within 1-2 weeks of the tournament or sooner (all links for week one photos will be sent at one time, links for week 2 will be sent all together but at a different time than week 1).
We would like the girls dressed in full gear minus helmets. Skate guards can be worn to the photoshoot location however need to be taken off prior to coming onto the blue or green screen. Onsite staff will help with the direction/flow of the photoshoot.

We’ve heard that sentiment from many first-timers over the years. WickFest is really not just about the hockey, but about the holistic experience. Immerse yourself and your team. The clinics and workshops are available to everyone in the family who is attending the event. That includes players, siblings, mom, dad, grandma, grandpa…. You get the idea.

The parent or guardian of every parent must sign the attached waiver. The person picking up the welcome bags must bring these waivers to the Team Check In desk in order to release the welcome bags. THESE ARE MANDATORY!
Teams who do not turn in their waivers can refused the right to play their games.
Welcome bag pick up
You will pick up your welcome bag prior to your first game at WinSport. We’d recommend bringing two people to pick up as they can be a bit cumbersome. In order to claim the welcome bags you’ll have to hand in all of your signed waivers and a paper printed copy of your Hockey Canada/official roster (sometimes known as a hard card).
You are off the hook. We hire professionals to do this job. You do NOT have to provide them. Game updates will be available on the Teamsnap Tournament Website.
We will provide the game sheets fully filled out with your roster. However, there are always times that something goes a little goofy, so it never hurts to have a copy of your roster stickers on hand, just in case.
At WinSport gear storage is available along the running track above Rink A at no cost. PLEASE DO NOT BLOCK THE exits and keep your bags along the wall, so that teams can still use the track and the Fire Marshall doesn’t make us move them. At Seven Chiefs an area in the gymnasium will be designated.

Dressing Room Attendants
Each rink will have a WickFest volunteer attendant. Their job is to be your liaison during the event. They will direct the gamesheets, ensure the timekeepers have the MVP awards, be sure there are refs, refill snacks, greet you, direct you, do their best to answer questions or get answers to your questions, etc. They are your eyes and ears and are a vital part of this event. We try to have the best people in this role. The most fun people. The people with the best smiles.
They are not there to be abused because you are upset or annoyed by something. They are volunteers and there to make your experience as positive as possible. There will be ZERO tolerance for rudeness to these folks. If you’ve got constructive feedback or a question, that’s okay. If you have a full-blown complaint or plan to have a meltdown, the Team Check-In desk is the place for you. Let’s remember the 24 hour rule when it comes to hockey.
Dressing Room Snacks
Dressing room snacks will be provided post-game. If your team has a serious allergy, please ask for a special sign from the Team Check In Desk at ice-level. Our dressing room attendants will take extra care cleaning your room prior to your entry. Snacks this year will include a selection of fruit, cheesestring (depending on availability) and KIND (nut free) granola bars.
We will also have a special treat after every game – this is going to be a surprise, but your teams are going to LOVE it. We promise!
Of course, we will have Gatorade Hydration Stations throughout the building all weekend as well.
Speaking of food, there is a full café – called The Garden Café at the WinSport facility. It has many options for healthy and indulgent snacks and food. It will be open 45 minutes prior to the start of the first game for coffee, etc. The food is really quite good.
Please be respectful that this is a place of business whose profits fund Olympic Sport in Canada and do not bring in outside food and set up your meals in their customer eating space in the main area by Rink B.
If you will be playing at Seven Chiefs, we are told the concession at that building will be open as well. It not, we will send out a notice in advance. I do highly recommend the restaurant at the Grey Eagle Hotel (one of our host hotels actually) nearby. The hamburger soup and fry bread is to die for (and no I receive nothing for that endorsement. Lol)
